NORTHMONT NJROTC WINS HAMILTON ATHLETIC COMPETITION
More than twenty Northmont NJROTC cadets traveled to Hamilton on Saturday, April 30, to compete in Hamilton High School NJROTC's third annual athletics competition. Athletics events included 3-on-3 basketball, pull ups, crunches, tug-of-war, dodgeball, guide-on relay, and dizzy-izzy relay. Twelve JROTC units from Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky competed in the day of fun, with Northmont taking first place in three events and second place in two. Our outstanding performance helped us to win the overall trophy, allowing us to play the all-unit dodgeball match with host Hamilton High School, who took second in the athletics meet. Sadly, our dodgeball skills were no match for theirs, but the trophies and team medals helped to soothe the burn of our embarrassing loss in dodgeball. Cadets Haman and Turner were named Northmont's Most Valuable Players, winning the event's special medals.
The Northmont NJROTC Athletics Team finished a strong fourth in last year's Harvest Physical Fitness Postal Competition, sponsored by the NJROTC unit at B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River, MA. The challenge featured 181 JROTC teams in PT, with Northmont just 5 points behind third-place Kennesaw Mountain (GA) High School, and just 27 points behind first-place J.W. Mitchell High School from New Port Richey, FL. Second place went to Bloom Trail High School in Chicago Heights. Northmont's top male athlete was Cadet O'Shea, and the top female athlete was Cadet Lowman.
Athletics is a demanding team that requires all cadets to meet the physical standards set before them. After competing in several athletics postals throughout the year, the Athletics Team competes at the Area 3 championships in Columbus each March, where they will prove their prowess in pushups, situps, and 100-meter and 220-meter relays. Depending on their success at Area 3, the team may travel to Pensacola to compete in Navy Nationals, where the competition level is fierce!
To practice YOUR pushups and situps, use the UP/DOWN cadence!
