Northmont NJROTC Wins Premiere Varsity Event

In its first varsity competition of the 2011-12 drill season, Northmont NJROTC continued its domination of Area Three's Navy JROTC teams by defeating Area 3 West powerhouses Zion Benton and East Aurora at the annual Central Crossing Drill Meet on Saturday, Nov. 12. First-place trophies in Color Guard, commanded by Caitlin Jones; Inspection, commanded by Katelyn Donnelly; and Armed Exhibition, commanded by Lucas Hanson, showed the depth of our competition teams, as each team included alternates who replaced their missing team members. Strong showings in Athletics and Academics helped to push Northmont ahead of our Navy Nationals rivals. Capping our win were four medals in Knock-out: Cadets Donnelly (2) and Lynde (3) in Unarmed, and Kinion (4) and Comer (5) in Armed.

Rhodes NJROTC from Cleveland emerged as our new Area 3 East rival, with three first-place trophies (Academics, Armed IDR, and Unarmed IDR) and a strong showing in Unarmed Exhibition. Other Area 3 East schools winning trophies included Greenville, Floyd Central, New Albany, and Parkersburg.

2010-11 DRILL SEASON RESULTS

NORTHMONT NJROTC WINS HAMILTON ATHLETIC COMPETITION

More than twenty Northmont NJROTC cadets traveled to Hamilton on Saturday, April 30, to compete in Hamilton High School NJROTC's third annual athletics competition. Athletics events included 3-on-3 basketball, pull ups, crunches, tug-of-war, dodgeball, guide-on relay, and dizzy-izzy relay. Twelve JROTC units from Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky competed in the day of fun, with Northmont taking first place in three events and second place in two. Our outstanding performance helped us to win the overall trophy, allowing us to play the all-unit dodgeball match with host Hamilton High School, who took second in the athletics meet. Sadly, our dodgeball skills were no match for theirs, but the trophies and team medals helped to soothe the burn of our embarrassing loss in dodgeball. Cadets Haman and Turner were named Northmont's Most Valuable Players, winning the event's special medals.

NORTHMONT NJROTC RANKED EIGHTH BEST IN THE NATION!

It was hot; it was humid; and it was intense.  And that was just the athletic competition!  Northmont NJROTC completed a highly competitive and highly successful drill season with a strong finish at the 2011 Navy Nationals in Pensacola, FL, April 8-9.

The two-day event pits the nation’s 25 best teams against each other in a competition involving athletics (push-ups, sit-ups, 8x220 relay and 16x100 shuttle relay), academics, personnel inspection and marching events (armed and unarmed Individual Drill Regulation, armed and unarmed exhibition and color guard).

Each day’s events start at 7 am and end after 8:30 in the evening.  When the sun set into the horizon beyond the Gulf of Mexico on April 9, Northmont had received 7 individual medals, tied for 3rd in academics and finished 8th in the nation.

Our female athletic members started the momentum by taking three individual awards: Cadet Teghan Sharp with 2nd place in sit-ups (289), Cadet Sarah Haman with 4th in sit-ups (285) and Cadet Kierstin Lowman with 8th in push-ups (72).  Shawnee Mission North High School from Kansas dominated both categories, with top finishers completing 160 push-ups and 330 sit-ups.

Northmont Cadet Evan Fleming placed 1st in the academic competition, a test so difficult (100 multiple choice questions covering four years of naval science curriculum and current events) that his winning score was a 68!

Northmont cadets also won awards at the competition’s last event, knock-out.  Hundreds of cadets filled the floor, executing individual stationary drill commands en mass with judges “knocking them out” by tapping them when the execution of the commands were not exactly as written in the drill manual.  When the dust settled Cadet Cody Petkus received 3rd, Cadet Kurtis Reid received 5th and Cadet Brett Wheeler received 7th in Armed Knock-out.

Northmont’s impressive finishes in inspection (9th), unarmed exhibition (11th), athletics (13th), armed exhibition (13th), armed IDR (13th), color guard (15th), unarmed IDR (17th) and the outstanding finish in academics catapulted the unit to 8th place, topping 10-time champion, Flour Bluff, and finishing higher than any Area 3 school in the history of Navy Nationals competition.

The 2011 Navy Nationals competition was won by 1st time champs Boca Raton High School from Boca Raton, Florida.  Rounding out the top 5 are Troy High School, Fullerton, CA; Centennial High School, Las Vegas, NV; Pine Forest High School, Pensacola, FL; and Shawnee Mission North High School, Overland Park, KS.  Area 3 West Champions Zion Benton High School from Zion, IL, finished 22nd.

The class of 2012, Lieutenant Colonel Ken Knotts, and Senior Chief James Griffin are already using this momentum to prepare to defend their Area 3 East title and compete at next year’s Navy Nationals.

NORTHMONT NJROTC NAVY BOLTS WIN AREA THREE

Northmont High School’s NJROTC unit overpowered 19 other teams from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and West Virginia to defend its Area 3 East crown in Grove City, Ohio, March 4-5, 2011.

Facing a tough challenge from friendly rivals Hamilton High School, the unit joined forces to take first place trophies in Armed IDR, commanded by Cadet Aaron Newsom, Color Guard, commanded by Cadet Melinda Ashley,  Armed Exhibition, commanded by Cadet Logan O’Shea, Academics, and Athletics.

Armed IDR Commander Aaron Newsom was awarded the Commander's Cup trophy.

Their second place award in Unarmed IDR and Unarmed Exhibition, and third place in Unit Personnel Inspection, helped catapult the team to first place overall in one of the toughest Area 3 East competitions ever, with the margin of victory a mere 14 points out of 5000 possible.

By outscoring top teams Hamilton and Central Crossing,
our cadets will represent Area 3 East at Navy Nationals in
PensacolaFlorida

In addition to team awards, Northmont dominated individual awards. Academics medals went to Brennan Dilts (6), Henry Dawson (4), and Evan Fleming (1).

The Athletics team effort was led by curl-up medal winners Cody Petkus (10), Logan O’Shea (9), Caitlin Donnelly (9), Michael Hefferon (6)Lauren Comer (6),  Ramsey Crow (5), Zach Hart (4), Nikki Stiver (4), Kacy Stiver (3), and Jonathan Whitesell (2), and pushups medal winners Caitlin Jones (8), Cody Petkus (7), Kacy Stiver (6), and Kierstin Lowman (1).

Cadets Corey Zwisler, Colton Fannin, Steven Winston, Lauren Comer, and Sarah Haman took fifth, fourth, third, second, and first place Armed Knockout medals respectively.

NORTHMONT NJROTC TAKES FIRST PLACE OVERALL AT CENTRAL CROSSING DRILL MEET

Saturday, November 20, 15 schools from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio competed in military drill and color guard at Central Crossing High School in Grove City, Ohio. The meet was judged by active duty Marine instructors from the Ohio State University ROTC Program and the Marine Reserve Center.

The Northmont  NJROTC unit was awarded 1st in Athletics, Color Guard, and Inspection; 2nd in Academics, 3rd in Armed Exhibition, 4th in Unarmed Basic Drill, and 5th in Unarmed Exhibition, bringing them the first place overall trophy and dethroning Central Crossing, winners of their home event for the past seven years.

Individual knock-out medal winners were Ayrissa Spainhower, Sarah Haman, Caitlin Donnelly, Anthony Brown, Colton Fannin and Cory Zwissler. An individual medal was also given to the Athletics Champion, Cody Petkus.

Zion Benton High School, from Zion, Illinois, who has competed at Navy Nationals in 2010, received second overall, and Hamilton High School earned third overall.

“The other JROTC units were marching very well this year, and it was a close competition, but our outstanding inspection scores were what really put us over the top, and that was our key to victory,” said Lt. Colonel Knotts. Senior Chief Griffin further stated, “These kids worked hard for this, and it shows!  They’ve been focused on getting better in all areas, but our competition is getting better, too, so we must continue to make strides toward preparing for the Area 3 championships.”

Congratulations to Northmont NJROTC for their excellent performance, for taking home the first place title, and for a great start to their varsity drill season.
